Flavour Profile: Wine, Spice, Dark Berries
The Story Behind the Coffee:
On the slopes of Mount Elgon in Uganda lies the Sironko region, a place rich with history and resilience. Centuries ago, during a famine, tribes moved east and discovered a life-sustaining river. They named it “Sironko,” meaning “solace” and “peacefulness” in the Lumasaba language. This river continues to sustain the land and communities around it today.
Our supplier’s washing station, located in the Budadiri subcounty near this historic river, processes coffee cherries from the surrounding communities. The Sironko Natural coffee reflects the depth and character of this unique region, with flavour notes of wine, spice, and dark berries.
Supporting Communities:
At Goatherd Coffee, we’re committed to sourcing coffee that has a positive impact. Our suppliers provide Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training to farmers to help improve quality, productivity, and yield, and they also supply agro inputs and seedlings to enhance sustainable growth.
Additionally, the Sironko team runs empowerment programmes for women and young people, offering workshops on resource ownership, family participation, and economic engagement. By creating farmer savings and loans groups, they support long-term economic stability within the community.
