Tasting Notes: Salted Caramel • Vanilla • Lemon
Process: Fully Washed | Altitude: 1,730 masl | Variety: Bourbon | Region: Kayanza
A beautifully expressive coffee from the slopes of Shikankoni Hill, this fully washed lot delivers a soft, sweet cup layered with salted caramel, creamy vanilla, and a bright twist of lemon acidity. It’s a vibrant example of Burundi’s potential for elegant, high-quality microlots.
Grown by smallholder farmers working with Cafex, a socially driven initiative founded by a Belgian-Burundian couple, this coffee reflects both craft and care. The project was born from a desire to revive ancestral coffee lands while delivering real, lasting impact for local communities.
Cafex pays farmers weekly during harvest, breaking the norm of long-delayed payments. This means access to medical care, education, and better living standards for farming families. Every bag supports a system where producers are respected, empowered, and consistently rewarded for quality.
After harvesting, the ripest cherries are fully washed and sun-dried on raised African beds, carefully tended and covered during peak sun to protect the cup’s clarity. Final milling happens at Ikawa Nziza, Burundi’s first purpose-built specialty dry mill, located at altitude to preserve delicate flavour.
What to Expect in the Cup:
A clean and comforting brew — silky and balanced, with soft caramel sweetness, a creamy vanilla depth, and a citrusy brightness that lifts the finish. Beautiful as both filter and espresso.
